Athletic retail membership & store experience · PUBLIC RESEARCH BRIEF

lululemonWhich membership benefit earns a return visit to lululemon?

lululemon's current help materials describe membership benefits including early access to product drops, specified sale-item exchange or credit, select classes, member events, receipt-free returns and free hemming. Its app also describes Store Mode for in-person shopping. This brief tests benefit discovery and clarity without claiming purchase or loyalty impact.

CHANGE ONE THING. LEARN WHAT MATTERS.

Three questions for the GTM team.

01

On the lululemon member home screen, would early product access or service benefits such as hemming and receipt-free returns be the more useful first message? Hold account and product availability constant.

02

For an eligible sale-item exchange or credit, would showing the restriction before purchase or at the start of the return journey better prevent incorrect expectations? Use a synthetic item and do not initiate a return.

03

In lululemon Store Mode, would a task-first view for checkout and product lookup or a benefit-first view for membership discovery better support an in-store visit? Use a fictional store and inventory.

PROPOSED AUDIENCE

Who should weigh in?

North American adult athletic-apparel shoppers who are active, occasional, lapsed or prospective lululemon members. Include app and non-app shoppers, online and store preference, different activity interests and experience with alterations or returns. Proposed audience; no purchase, visit, loyalty or retention outcome is implied.

TWO TIME HORIZONS

Trial today. A habit tomorrow?

Near term · 0–90 days

Over 0–90 days, test member-home, sale-item and Store Mode prototypes with synthetic accounts, items and store states. Measure benefit recall, restriction comprehension, task completion and mistaken eligibility. Do not purchase, reserve inventory, change accounts or initiate returns.

Longer term · 3–12 months

Over 3–12 months, follow approved cohorts across seasonal drops, store visits and service use. Examine benefit discovery, app dependence, event relevance, alteration expectations, return friction and cross-channel consistency. Purchase, visit or retention claims require observed behavior and controls.

What would make the result actionable?

Use versioned membership terms, synthetic receipts and known-correct item and store states. Randomize presentation while holding inventory and eligibility constant; include unavailable, ineligible and no-action cases; test accessibility and require human review before any live member communication.

A Gather simulation returns hypothetical customer reactions. Quantifying revenue, traffic or retention needs actual business inputs and validation against observed behavior.
