SEO & AI-search measurement · PUBLIC RESEARCH BRIEF

SemrushWhich visibility view turns ranking movement into the right next investigation?

Semrush currently describes Position Tracking as daily monitoring for selected keywords across devices, locations and search engines, including traditional and AI-search surfaces. Its documentation also describes reports for rankings, pages, competitors, SERP features and exports. This brief studies interpretation and prioritization; it does not claim that a ranking change was caused by a particular optimization.

CHANGE ONE THING. LEARN WHAT MATTERS.

Three questions for the GTM team.

01

Would a Semrush Position Tracking overview grouped first by business topic or first by search surface better help an SEO lead choose what to investigate after a ranking movement?

02

When traditional rankings and AI-search visibility move differently, would a side-by-side evidence panel or a guided diagnostic sequence better prevent users from treating correlation as causation?

03

For a weekly stakeholder update, would a change-first summary or a goal-first summary better help an analyst explain what moved, what remains uncertain and what action needs validation?

PROPOSED AUDIENCE

Who should weigh in?

North American SEO, content and digital marketing teams using or evaluating Semrush, including individual practitioners, agency analysts, in-house managers and stakeholders who consume reports. Recruit participants with different campaign scopes and reporting responsibilities. Proposed audience; no customer account, keyword set or performance result is included.

TWO TIME HORIZONS

Trial today. A habit tomorrow?

Near term · 0–90 days

Over 0–90 days, test seeded Position Tracking prototypes with fictional keywords, locations, devices and search surfaces. Measure correct identification of the changed segment, confidence calibration, unsupported causal claims and selection of an appropriate follow-up check. Do not use a real client's campaign.

Longer term · 3–12 months

Over 3–12 months, follow consenting teams using test or de-identified campaigns as keyword sets, competitors and reporting audiences change. Examine whether saved views and report framing improve investigation quality, stakeholder comprehension and repeat use. Any claim about traffic or revenue impact requires separate analytics and controlled evidence.

What would make the result actionable?

Use versioned Semrush documentation, synthetic campaign datasets with a hidden change log, task-based comprehension tests and analyst review. Compare answers against Search Console or analytics only when authorized and appropriately de-identified; record engine, device, location and observation dates; distinguish ranking observations from causes.

A Gather simulation returns hypothetical customer reactions. Quantifying revenue, traffic or retention needs actual business inputs and validation against observed behavior.
