Streaming subscription & household experience · PUBLIC RESEARCH BRIEF
NetflixWhich Netflix plan explanation makes the tradeoff easiest to understand?
Netflix's current help materials describe monthly plans with different ad experiences, supported simultaneous devices, download allowances and extra-member options. They also describe household profiles with individual recommendations and settings. This brief studies how those choices should be explained without treating stated preference as a subscription or viewing outcome.

Three questions for the GTM team.
For a new Netflix household profile, would choosing viewing interests first or setting language, maturity and playback preferences first create a clearer start? Use a synthetic account and do not alter recommendations.
Set up this study →Before travel or an offline period, would proactive download and compatibility guidance or guidance shown only when a member tries to download reduce avoidable confusion? Use fictional titles and devices.

Who should weigh in?
North American adult streaming consumers who are evaluating, starting, changing or returning to Netflix. Include ad-supported and ad-free consideration, solo and multi-person households, varied device use and different familiarity with downloads and profiles. Proposed audience; no subscription, viewing or retention outcome is implied.
TWO TIME HORIZONS
Trial today. A habit tomorrow?
Near term · 0–90 days
Over 0–90 days, test plan, profile and offline-viewing prototypes with synthetic households, fixed device lists and versioned plan rules. Measure comprehension, eligibility mistakes, setup completion and expectation gaps. Do not create accounts, change plans or record real viewing activity.
Longer term · 3–12 months
Over 3–12 months, follow approved cohorts across plan changes, household changes and device replacement. Examine ad-experience expectations, profile separation, download discovery, extra-member confusion and cancellation or return journeys. Subscription, viewing or retention claims require observed behavior and controls.
What would make the result actionable?
Use current regional plan rules, synthetic accounts and known-correct device and download states. Randomize presentation while holding price, catalog and household assumptions constant; include unavailable and no-change cases; separate comprehension from stated intent and require human review.
A Gather simulation returns hypothetical customer reactions. Quantifying revenue, traffic or retention needs actual business inputs and validation against observed behavior.
