Audio subscriptions & audiobook listening · PUBLIC RESEARCH BRIEF
SpotifyDo listeners understand the hours before they start the book?
Spotify's US audiobooks page describes monthly audiobook listening time in eligible Premium plans, separate add-ons and an Audiobooks Access plan. It also explains that unused monthly hours expire. This creates a research question about choosing a plan and starting a title with a realistic understanding of how listening time works.

Three questions for the GTM team.
Before starting a long Spotify audiobook, would showing the title's remaining duration against available monthly hours help the listener choose when to begin? Treat that display as a proposed concept, not an existing feature, and separate understanding from willingness to upgrade.
Set up this study →When a listener approaches the monthly limit, which current option feels most appropriate for the immediate goal: wait for the next cycle, use an eligible add-on or purchase the title? Verify the respondent's actual plan eligibility and avoid presenting one choice as universally better.

Who should weigh in?
US adults who listen to audiobooks or are considering their first audiobook on Spotify. Include eligible Premium plan managers, plan members whose access differs, add-on prospects and people comparing an Audiobooks Access plan with purchasing a title. Recruit adults only. Proposed audience groups; no market share or conversion rate is implied.
TWO TIME HORIZONS
Trial today. A habit tomorrow?
Near term · 0–90 days
Over 0–90 days, recruit adults with verified current plan types and give them realistic title-selection and limit scenarios. Measure correct plan comprehension, qualified starts, help-seeking and any plan action separately. Do not count a promotional trial as durable audiobook use.
Longer term · 3–12 months
Over 3–12 months, follow opt-in listeners across multiple monthly cycles. Examine starts, completions, unused hours, limit encounters, add-on continuation and plan changes. Separate seasonal listening and a single anticipated title from an enduring preference for audiobooks.
What would make the result actionable?
Use current US plan terms, consented account events and title-duration data. Compare stated understanding with actual listening and billing outcomes, controlling for plan role and catalog eligibility. A retention or revenue case requires observed contribution, trial cost and substitution across Spotify options; simulated choice is not payment behavior.
A Gather simulation returns hypothetical customer reactions. Quantifying revenue, traffic or retention needs actual business inputs and validation against observed behavior.
